Phase I: New private art school for all ages at downtown location, including classrooms, offices, darkrooms and a gallery. The building spine serves as a connector to link all the functions both visually and functionally and serves as a separation point on the site between the support functions and the actual classrooms. The classrooms are all north of the spine to allow them to take advantage of natural light. The interior space along the spine allows interaction of students physically and visually allows spaces to connect to each other. The main entrance facade is in scale with the context of the existing neighborhood. The project received an Architectural Merit Award from AIA Eastern Pennsylvania.Phase II: W2A designed a 10,500 SF addition to the Baum School of Art to accommodate its growing enrollment. The addition was recently completed and houses a 1,550 SF multi-purpose room, two large classroom / studio spaces, and two gallery areas.
The project included design for the Charles C. Dent Memorial Garden, an outdoor plaza. The Garden is home to a 15-foot bronze sculpture of Leonardo da Vinci’s Horse. Grant funding for the sculpture was achieved with the help of W2A’s computer renderings.
