As a follow-on to the original design for Two Rivers Landing completed by W2A Design Group (with Schwartz Silver Architects) in 1996; W2A completed building renovation design for Crayola. Crayola took occupancy of the entire building in early 2012; and in early 2013, completely revamped all exhibits in the building. W2A’s renovation design work was both in support of the new exhibits and in anticipation of increased visitor traffic to the “Crayola Experience”.The initial 1996 project created a museum and visitor’s center from the former Orr’s Department Store (comprised of five brick commercial and warehouse buildings, constructed between 1850 and 1929) and the former Farr’s Shoe Store building. The architectural challenge was to knit these existing buildings into a single 95,000 SF facility, which was further complicated by varying floor levels in the multiple buildings. The prominence of the new “whole” building on Easton’s Centre Square dictated that the complex’s historic architectural roots be respected through major renovation and reconstruction.
The 1996 project housed the Crayola visitors’ center / museum, the National Canal Museum, a National Park Service visitors center, a McDonald’s Express® restaurant, a 120-seat auditorium, gift shop and offices.
With the completion of renovations and reopening in May 2013, the building now houses the Crayola Experience, the Crayola Retail Store (relocated from the Alpha Building) and the Crayola Café.
