W2A Design Group provided full A/E services for major renovations to the historic Zimbar-Liljenstien Building (c. 1938), ESU’s former Physical Education Building with gymnasium, swimming pool and locker rooms. The building was converted to a Student Services Center, also housing instructional and administrative spaces. These dramatic changes, coupled with the age of the building, dictated extensive renovations to the facility.
The project site encompassed the existing ESU childcare center, located in a portable classroom building. As part of the project, this portable classroom was eliminated and replaced with new construction. The new childcare center was located in the existing east wing of the building plus a new one-story addition. The addition was carefully designed to match the style and materials of the existing historic building. As the building is also used for instructional purposes, visual transparency into and between classrooms was mandated for observation. A secure vestibule entry was provided. An associated drop-off / pick-up parking area was also included.
