W2A Design Group provided full A/E services for major renovations to Zimbar-Liljenstien Building (c. 1938), ESU’s former Physical Education Building with gymnasium, swimming pool and locker rooms. The building was converted to a Student Services Center, also housing instructional and administrative spaces. These dramatic changes, coupled with the age of the building, dictated extensive renovations to the facility. A new second floor was added within the existing gymnasium space with one section retained as a 2-story atrium space with a new skylight above. All architectural components and finishes, HVAC, plumbing, electrical and fire protection systems were repaired or replaced to meet current codes. With the addition of an elevator, the building was made completely accessible. It includes the following components:
- Student Services including Office of the Registrar, Financial Aid Office, Student Loans Office, Office of the Director of Continuing Education and Summer Sessions, and the Student Long Distance Telephone Service Office. These services were formerly scattered across the ESU campus and are now consolidated.
- A Child Care Center for children of students, staff and faculty, is housed within the east wing of the building with a single-story addition (2,200 SF). An associated drop-off / pick-up parking area was included.
