W2A Design Group provided full design services for the new Parkland Community Library, including programming and site investigations for multiple sites. The functional requirements of the space program for the new library translated into an organizational concept of the “pinwheel”.The plan and subsequent form allow for abundant natural light to filter deep into the interior of the Library. The “Pavilion in the Park” concept with gentle low arch roof shapes and the raised roof area over a central gathering space provide healthful natural light throughout the building, while saving energy / operational costs.
A stunning interior environment is being created through the proper selection and placement of stacks, thoughtful use of specially designed interior glazed partitions and warm wood finishes. Comfortable furnishings will define seating areas, plus add splashes of color and texture. Reading gardens for adults and children will provide patrons the option for outdoor reading. The strategic placement of main spaces such as the Community Room, Café, Circulation, Reference, Children’s Library and Young Adults Areas create a versatile efficient Library. State of the art technology systems have been incorporated throughout the project.
Careful planning has ensured that future expansions can occur independently by department. Normal Library operations will be maintained without the typical array of disruptions that often result during construction processes.
