W2A Design Group was challenged to design and create two new accessible toilet rooms within a multi-purpose space, adjacent to the Nave. The Church wished to retain all exterior stained glass windows and re-use other architectural features within the area to be renovated.
Existing conditions at the Church provided only one unisex ADA restroom, which was not coded compliant, and a second small Women’s Room. W2A was able to design a new Women’s Restroom including an ADA stall, 2 typical stalls, a Bridal Make-Up area and a spacious solid surface counter with 2 sinks. An existing stained glass window was retained (originally part of an alcove) and incorporated as a feature above the Women’s Vanity; allowing natural light into space. The Men’s Toilet Room was designed to include an ADA stall, a typical stall, urinal and solid surface counter with 2 sinks.
Oak Folding doors, originally used to close off the (renovated) area below an existing mezzanine, were retained as an interior design wall feature. During construction, the folding doors were fixed to a new partition and remained as the outside wall finish of the new toilet room area. Existing stained glass windows were also retained in the new corridor serving the new toilet rooms.
