W2A completed two preliminary studies related to the Postal Service’s General Mail and Vehicle Maintenance Facilities in Lehigh Valley PA. The first study examined two options for renovation/expansion of the existing facilities and one option for construction of new facilities. The study report included preliminary estimates, phasing, and advantages/ disadvantages of each option.Upon the Postal Service’s decision to build new General Mail and Vehicle Maintenance Facilities (GMF/VMF), the second study presented a functional design schematic with gross area tabulations, preliminary cost estimates, and conceptual site and floor plans. Subsequent to the second study, W2A was awarded the contract for final design of the new facilities.
The 19,300 SF Vehicle Maintenance Facility has an adjacent parking area for vehicles awaiting maintenance. Improvements to the 35-acre site included separate parking areas for 535 employee vehicles and 70 customer vehicles plus segregated truck and automobile access/circulation routes.
The 300,000+ SF General Mail Facility contains 3 major functional components: a mail processing area, regional administrative offices, and public service areas. The GMF was designed to have expansion flexibility for the mail processing and office areas and to allow truck access to the 38 loading docks on two sides of the building.
